Celebrating Unity During Pride
June marks the observance of Pride Month – a history that traces back to a parade held in New York City in 1970 to mark the one-year anniversary of what became known as the Stonewall Uprising. The Stonewall Uprising was a response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn bar—which at the time was a common occurrence supported by discriminatory laws. Many of these laws still exist today. For example, in twenty-eight states landlords have the legal right to deny housing to members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Pride Month, while divisive in the Christian faith, is a month that recognizes the ongoing struggle for full inclusion and recognition of the LGBTQIA+ community in society and the church. It is a coming together of the community and its allies to continue the work of just inclusion in all facets of life. The use of the term pride, by the community, is rooted in the definition of self-respect and acceptance.
One might ask, given the controversy, why then would a financial ministry choose to write about Pride, as part of our blog series on Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Accessibility (DEBA)?
As part of our recent DEBA market research, we learned that communities which have been historically excluded or underserved need to know explicitly that they are welcome – that they belong. Lifting up Pride Month as part of our DEBA blog series, along with other months such as Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, or Black History Month is one of many ways in which we can extend a welcome to all who serve.
At Pension Fund, we remain focused on and true to our mission, For the Support of Ministry, and our vision, that every Stone-Campbell (Restoration) Movement church pastor and lay employee will enjoy a strong, smart, and secure retirement. Our mission is rooted in Alexander Campbell’s words that it was the right and duty to receive an offering for the support of the ministry and the widows and orphans of those who served. From his initial call in 1840 to today, we serve those who the church calls and employs, including the LGBTQIA+ community. We welcome all to save for retirement. We provide equal benefits and security to members and their loved ones without regard for sexual orientation or identity, race, ethnicity, gender, age, or marital status, among other categories.
At Pension Fund, we take pride that we can meet our members where they are, offer equal benefits, and treat all who serve with dignity and respect.

How to Maximize Your Housing Allowance Benefit
If you have served in ministry for any length of time, you probably know the basics of housing allowance. It is a unique tax benefit available to qualified ministers — a portion of your income that can be excluded from taxable income if it is used for housing. But here is something that does not get talked about nearly enough: the housing allowance is not just a tax break for right now. Used thoughtfully, it can be a powerful tool for long-term financial health, especially in retirement.
