Week of Ministry | Flourishing Matters

I Stock 1778101295

As part of our Week of Ministry reflections, Reverend Doctor Denise Bell—endowed Donald and Lily Nunley Chair of Pastoral Leadership at Lexington Theological Seminary—offers a powerful message on the importance of flourishing in ministry. In this heartfelt video, Reverend Bell explores how wellness—mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical—is not just a personal goal but a sacred expression of God’s love.

Flourishing is a journey toward life-giving alignment, where we show up whole and energized, ready to serve from a place of abundance rather than depletion. Reverend Bell reminds us that fruitful ministry begins with self-care and boundaries, and that we cannot pour from an empty cup.

She acknowledges the real challenges clergy face: fast-paced culture, resistant systems, and the consuming nature of vocational calling. Yet, she offers hope through practical practices—spiritual disciplines, Sabbath rhythms, daily wellness habits, and joyful recreation—that help us navigate these demands and continue to live well.

This message is a timely invitation to embrace wellness not only during the Week of Ministry, but as a lifelong commitment to wholeness. When we flourish, we embody love—for God, for ourselves, and for our communities.
